How to reply to founder and VC posts on X: the post types you meet, reply angles that add something, six sample replies and the usual mistakes.
Startup X is founders, early employees, angel investors and people who want to be one of those. They post fundraising news, hiring struggles, advice threads, and the occasional honest account of a company that did not work. Investors watch the replies to see who thinks clearly, and founders watch them to find people who have been through the same thing.
Replies work here because the posts are often opinions stated with confidence, which invites a reasoned second view. A founder who says "never hire before product market fit" will engage with a reply that describes the one hire that saved your company before you had it. Polite, specific disagreement is normal in this niche and gets read.
01
"We raised our seed round." The replies fill with congratulations within minutes. A question about what changed in the pitch between the first and last meeting is rarer and gets answers.
02
Numbered rules for founders, often from investors or second-time founders. Pick the rule you have broken on purpose and say what happened.
03
First hires, cofounder splits, remote versus office. These invite stories from your own team more than opinions.
04
Founders explaining why a company closed. Kind, specific replies matter most here. Ask about the decision point, not the failure.
01
Startup rules are general by design. Your company is a specific case. Describe the one time the rule did not hold and why, in a sentence or two.
02
Founders like to talk about the moment something changed: the meeting where an investor said yes, the week usage started growing. Ask what that moment was.
03
Advice like "hire slowly" says nothing about how. Add the practical step: the test project you used, the question that filtered candidates.
04
Much advice is true at one stage and wrong at another. Pointing out which stage a rule fits makes the thread more useful for everyone reading it.
05
Pitch decks, demo days and "stealth mode" are easy targets for a light joke. Aim it at the ritual, never at the founder.

Rule for first-time founders: never hire anyone before product market fit. Do everything yourself.

We broke this with one hire, a support person, at month four. Her notes from customer calls are what got us to fit.

We're shutting down after 3 years. Ran out of runway, couldn't raise the next round. Proud of what we built.

Sorry, that's a hard post to write. Was there a point where you saw it coming, or did the last round decide it?

Cofounder equity should always be split 50/50. Anything else breeds resentment.
Balas
Vesting matters more than the split in my experience. We had 50/50 with no cliff and one of us left at month five.

Day 1 of building in stealth. Can't say what it is yet but it's going to change everything.
Balas
the most stealthy part is that this post already has more detail than most pitch decks I've seen

Hiring tip: always do a paid trial project before making an offer. Saved us from 3 bad hires.

How long were the trials? We tried a week and good candidates with jobs couldn't do it. Two evenings worked better for us.
