Reddit punishes self-promotion and AI-sounding replies. How to read a subreddit, write replies that get upvoted, and mention your own work without a ban.
On X and LinkedIn you are building a personal audience. On Reddit you are a guest in someone else's community, and each subreddit has its own rules, moderators and culture. The same reply can be upvoted in one sub and removed in another.
Reddit users are also unusually quick to spot marketing and machine-written text, and they say so in public. A reply that reads like either gets downvoted, reported, or both. The upside is that a genuinely helpful reply keeps getting found through search for years.
Before your first reply in a subreddit:
The replies that rise answer the question that was asked, from experience, in plain words. They are specific ("I switched from X to Y last spring and the thing that broke was…"), honest about limits ("I have only tried this on a small project"), and short enough to read in one go.
First person helps. So does admitting what you do not know. Formatting rarely does: headers and bullet lists in a casual thread look like a chatbot or a press release.
Many subreddits follow some version of the old rule of thumb: most of what you post should not be about your own work. In practice:
Many subreddits now ban AI-generated content outright, and others remove it when it is obvious. Even where it is allowed, a pasted AI answer tends to get called out. If you use an AI tool, use it for a first draft or to get unstuck, then rewrite the reply in your own words with your own experience in it.
Never paste a draft as is in a sub that bans AI content. That is the fastest route to a ban.
ReplyKit's Reddit drafts are written in a plain Reddit voice: specific, a little dry, no pitch and no marketing. It reads the post and the comments above yours, and it never posts for you. Because so many subs ban AI content, treat its drafts as a starting point to rewrite, not a reply to paste. You can try it on any thread with the free Reddit reply generator.

There is no company behind this, just one developer who reads every message. If ReplyKit does not fit how you work, a feature, a platform, a different style of reply, say so. Requests from users decide what ships next.
