50 back to school tweet ideas for students, parents and teachers

Back to school week is one of the few moments when almost everyone on your timeline shares the same experience at once: the early alarm, the supply list, the first day photo, the 120 new names to learn. That shared moment is what makes these tweets easy to relate to.

Every tweet on this page is original, written for you to post or adapt. Square brackets mark the bits to fill in.

The 50 ideas below are original and split by who is posting: students, parents, teachers and college students. Most work as written. The best version of each adds one detail from your own first week.

Students

  1. 01

The first day outfit was planned in July. The second day outfit was planned at 7:42am.

  2. 02

New school year, new notebook, same handwriting that gives up halfway down page one.

  3. 03

Every year I promise to keep my notes organized and every October they're a pile of loose sheets and hope.

  4. 04

summer went from "we have so much time" to "wait school starts monday" in about a week

  5. 05

The confidence of buying 12 highlighters is unmatched. I will use two.

  6. 06

First week back goal: remember my locker combination by Friday.

  7. 07

Nothing humbles you like a 6:30 alarm after two months of waking up at 11.

  8. 08

This year I'm sitting near the front. Not for the learning. For the outlet.

  9. 09

Teacher: what did you do this summer? Me, who slept and rewatched one show three times: traveled, mostly in my mind.

  10. 10

New school year resolution: start each assignment the day it's assigned. Check back on this in two weeks.

  11. 11

the backpack is heaviest on day one because i brought every single thing on the supply list just in case

  12. 12

Shoutout to everyone walking into a new school this week not knowing anyone. Give it a month.

  13. 13

Back to school means back to debating whether 10 more minutes of sleep is worth skipping breakfast. It always is.

Parents

  1. 14

Dropped the kids off for the first day. Sat in the car for five minutes of total silence. Bliss, then mild guilt, then bliss again.

  2. 15

The supply list asked for one very specific glue stick and I visited four stores like it was a quest.

  3. 16

Labeling every item my kid owns with their name, knowing at least one jacket will vanish by October anyway.

  4. 17

School morning breakdown: 45 minutes getting ready 3 minutes actually leaving 1 forgotten lunch

  5. 18

My child grew two shoe sizes over the summer and announced it the night before school.

  6. 19

Asked my kid how the first day was. "Fine." Asked what they did. "Nothing." Thrilling report as always.

  7. 20

The first day photo on the front step: 15 attempts, one where everyone is looking, and that one is blurry.

  8. 21

Packing lunches again and realizing I've forgotten which three foods my kid currently agrees to eat.

  9. 22

parents of new kindergarteners: it's ok if you cried more than they did. most of us did

  11. 24

The first week back always reminds me that the school year is a group project with 30 families.

  12. 25

Set up a lovely homework corner with good lighting and supplies. Kid is doing homework on the hallway floor.

  13. 26

Reminder for parents this week: the early bedtime starts working around day four. Hang in there.

Teachers

  1. 27

Teachers spent the last week of summer making a classroom look calm for the 30 minutes before the kids arrive.

  2. 28

First day as a teacher is saying your name, the rules and "please put that down" on a loop.

  3. 29

Bought tissues for the classroom again. Twenty-eight people who all catch the same cold in the same week.

  4. 30

Learning 120 new names this week. If I call you by last year's student's name, I'm sorry, I'm still loading.

  5. 31

Teacher tip: the seating chart you make on day one gets rewritten by day three. Use a pencil.

  6. 32

To the teachers going back this week: for some kid, you're about to be the steadiest adult in their day. That matters.

  7. 33

"Do we need to write this down?" Yes. Always yes. That's why it's on the board.

  8. 34

the staff room coffee is back and so is my tolerance for it

Every teacher has a first day speech they rewrite every August. This is the year it's finally right. Probably.

  11. 37

Kids remember the teacher who learned their name fast and said it right. Worth the effort this week.

  12. 38

My voice after the first week back sits somewhere between a late night radio host and a whisper.

College and university

  1. 39

First year tip: the syllabus answers most of the questions you'll want to email the professor about. Read it once properly.

How to make it land

  • Post in the actual week school starts where you are. Dates differ a lot between countries and regions, and the tweet lands best while everyone's living it.
  • Add a real detail: the number of forms you signed, the subject of your 8am, what your kid said word for word. That detail is what gets the quote tweets.
  • Parents and teachers reply to each other's back to school posts. A tweet that is kind to the other side ("to the teachers going back") gets shared by both.
  • Keep kids' names, faces and schools out of public posts. The joke works just as well without them.
  • A first day question works too: "Teachers, what's the first thing you say on day one?" gives people an easy reason to reply.
